      BMW R1200 GS

      Year: 2016

      Owner: Ciro De Pasquale

            Overall Rating

BMW R1200GS touring motorcycle is mainly designed for urban environment on relative good tarmac roads, basically due to the average size fuel tank and cast aluminum wheels, among other small details. The GS is without a doubt, a very good alternative to start building an all-road touring motorcycle. The BMW R1200GS is able to carry a big load and provides comfortable riding with a passenger. The GS has excellent rider ergonomics for long distance touring. No wonder why the GS has been the king of the category. It is very comfortable, easy to ride and also an excellent everyday bike.

            Ride Quality & Brakes

Along with the newly designed Telelever at the front and the EVO Paralever at the rear, this has resulted in a further significant increase in torsional stiffness and hence ride stability and steering precision. A handy feature both on and off road. The brake system of the R 1200 GS has been extensively revised, too. There are now radially mounted Brembo Monobloc brake calipers at the front and a larger brake disc at the rear. The GS is also fitted as standard with the BMW Motorrad ABS

            Engine

The new engine offers superior power and performance in the travel enduro segment and beyond. It continues to use air/liquid cooling, however, the coolant oil has been replaced by a glycol-water mixture. This ensures a high level of heat absorption capacity of the cooling liquid for more efficient heat dissipation. The two radiators are small and inconspicuously integrated. The through-flow is now vertical instead of horizontal for improved filling, and the engine housing integrates the 6-speed gearbox as well as a wet clutch with anti-hopping function instead of the dry clutch as was used previously. The secondary drive now runs via the well-established cardan shaft on the left-hand side.

            Build Quality & Reliability

The quality of the fit and finish remains the same with BMW motorcycles. The overall design and the ergonomics of the motorcycle shows the project team paid close attention to who adventure riders are and how this bike was going to be used.

            Equipment

A wide selection of factory accessory and equipment package versions allow to tune up the BMW R1200 GS for very versatile scenarios and personal preferences. The factory packages offers some of the parts that are relevant for touring requirements. Besides the riding modes, this bike had heated grips, cruise control, the ability to turn ABS off with a switch, and a wheel-shaped control that operates the GPS. It also has an ESA suspension adjustment (normal, soft, hard).
